We work with children aged 6+ to help answer two key questions:
A psychological assessment will identify individual learning strengths and weaknesses. It will also determine whether a condition such as Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Intellectual Developmental Disorder or giftedness may be present.
We enjoy working with children who are seeing a psychologist for the first time, as well as children who have an existing condition such as Autism but need additional assessment to gain a better understanding of their learning needs.
The assessment has 4 parts, which take place on different days:
We don't use a one-size-fits-all approach. We work with you to understand the nature of your child's challenges, and then plan our testing in response to your questions and concerns. We can focus on areas such as intellectual abilities, language, memory, attention, planning and executive function, and mental health concerns. Where relevant, we also complete an in-depth assessment of your child's academic skills, focusing on reading, writing, and/or maths .
Testing takes around 3 hours for most children. For younger children or those who find it difficult to work for an extended period of time, we offer flexible booking arrangements to ensure they can perform at their best.
We work hard to make sure the testing process is fun for children. We play games and take regular breaks. We are experienced in helping children experiencing anxiety or dysregulation feel relaxed and safe through this process.
Where relevant, we can diagnose Specific Learning Disorders such as Dyslexia, Intellectual Developmental Disorder, and other learning and developmental differences such as Giftedness.
We can screen for Autistic traits, but do not offer comprehensive Autism assessments.
In the parent/carer feedback session, we use plain language to share what we learned through the testing. We work collaboratively with you to understand what the results mean for your child. We work together to identify strategies and interventions that are likely to be helpful. You will have time to ask questions, walking away with concrete strategies, specific resources, and contact details for services that can help.
We also offer feedback sessions for children aged 8+. When children are included in the feedback sessions, they are empowered to understand themselves better, and they develop an increased awareness of their strengths, not just their challenges. This sets them up well to become effective self-advocates in the future. These sessions use child friendly language and focus on strengths and strategies for doing well. During the session, we develop a one-page written summary about your child that they can take home. We encourage you to come along to the session with your child so that you can develop a shared language that will help you talk about relevant issues with your child in the future.
Our reports are written in clear accessible language, and include details about the strategies and services that we discussed in the feedback session. Where relevant, we will record a formal diagnosis.
The fee for the service described above is $1,950.
In a small number of cases, we identify that additional testing may be helpful, and an additional fee may be added. We will always discuss the pros and cons of additional testing before proceeding.
